Andy Sheldon

Role: Concept Lead, Producer, Director, Videographer, Editor
Client: Emory University
Campaign: 2026 Alumni Awards

Brief

Created as part of Emory University’s annual Alumni Awards, this short documentary honors 2026 Community Impact Award recipient Andy Sheldon. Each year, award winners are recognized through a film that captures their story and impact. This piece was designed to illuminate Andy’s extraordinary career and personal journey, connecting his work in civil rights cold cases with his later path toward healing through art.

Constraints

  • Tight production timeline aligned with awards programming

  • Small, agile production team

  • Limited access to archival materials requiring thoughtful sourcing and integration

  • Sensitive subject matter requiring care, accuracy, and emotional nuance

Concept & Strategy

I developed the narrative framework to weave together two distinct but deeply connected chapters of Andy’s life: his work as a trial consultant on landmark civil rights cases, and his later turn to painting as a response to PTSD.

The film balances historical weight with personal introspection. By pairing archival imagery and footage with present-day interviews and visuals, the story moves between past and present, showing not only the impact of Andy’s work, but the lasting emotional toll it carried.

The central idea positions art as both a personal healing mechanism and a broader commentary on the enduring burden placed on African Americans in the United States.

Execution

I directed, shot, and edited the film, leading a small team of additional shooters and collaborating with a producer for scheduling and logistics.

Key responsibilities included:

  • Narrative development and interview direction

  • On-location cinematography and visual storytelling approach

  • Integration of archival photography and historical footage

  • Editing, pacing, and overall story construction

The edit was intentionally crafted to feel reflective and immersive, allowing space for both the gravity of the cases and the quiet transformation found in Andy’s artwork.

Outcome

  • Final film presented as part of Emory’s 2026 Alumni Awards

  • Delivered a deeply human, emotionally resonant portrait of the recipient

  • Successfully connected historical civil rights work to contemporary artistic expression

  • Demonstrated ability to lead full creative execution on a sensitive, story-driven documentary with a lean team
